Step 09 — Iron, Tannins, and Mineral Dyes

Beyond plants and insects, dyers have long drawn colour — or colour-altering power — from the mineral world: rusty water, iron-rich mud, tannin-soaked bark, and ancient earth pigments. This note covers the three most important mineral and plant-mineral sources in natural dyeing.

Iron as a Dye Modifier and Mordant

Iron is technically a mordant (it helps fix dye to fibre), but it’s equally powerful as a colour modifier — a substance that shifts an existing colour in the dyebath or as an afterbath. Its action is sometimes called saddening because it deepens and darkens colours, moving yellows toward olive green, reds toward brown-purple, and tans toward almost black.

The mechanism: iron ions bind to dye molecules already on the fibre and alter the way those molecules absorb light, shifting the perceived colour. Just a small amount — 2–4% weight of fibre — produces a dramatic change. Using too much iron for too long causes iron damage: fibres become brittle and degrade over time.

Iron modifier can be used as an afterbath (dip the dyed fibre into a dilute iron solution after dyeing) or as a co-mordant (add iron to the dyebath directly). The afterbath approach is more controllable and is the recommended starting point. See also Step 11 — Colour Modifiers and Afterbaths.

Rusty water — water in which rusty iron nails or scraps have been soaking — is a gentler, variable-strength source of iron that many dyers prefer over measured ferrous sulphate. The strength is unpredictable but the spirit is more experimental and forgiving.

Tannins — Plant Compounds with Dual Roles

Tannins are polyphenolic compounds found in bark, galls, leaves, and seed pods of many plants. They earn their own entry here because they sit at the intersection of mordanting and dyeing: they function as a mordant for cellulose fibres (creating bonding sites that attract metallic mordants and dyes), and they contribute their own warm brown or grey-brown colour.

For using iron over tannin to create dark grey and near-black on plant fibres, iron + tannin is the classic recipe: tannin mordant first, then iron afterbath. The result is a warm to cool grey-black depending on the tannin source.

Mineral and Earth Pigments

Before the development of metallic mordant salts, many cultures used mineral dyes — pigments derived directly from the earth. Ochre (iron oxide), umber, sienna, and clay-based pigments can be applied directly to fabric, though they sit on the surface rather than bonding at a molecular level and tend to rub off unless fixed with an organic binder.

More durably, some cultures used ferruginous mud — iron-rich clay — to both mordant and colour fabric simultaneously. The cloth is buried or soaked in the mud, then dyed or left as-is. The technique is still used in parts of West Africa and Southeast Asia.

Logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum) is a heartwood dye (technically plant-derived) worth mentioning here because its colour depends entirely on its mineral companion: with iron it produces blue-black; with alum, purple; with chrome, a warm black. Its tannin-like behaviour and mineral dependency put it in this chapter’s territory. It remains widely used for achieving black and charcoal on natural fibres.
